First Impressions

Postby Emerald Rocker » Sat Feb 21, 2015 10:16 pm

I just started playing Beyond Shadowgate. I went in expecting mediocrity, and I'm pleasantly surprised so far. I'm only a little bit past the dungeon, but here's what I'm thinking so far:

* Impressively smooth animation
* Old adventure charm: kitschy but menacing monsters, lots of ways to die, and the whole "learn by dying" mindset
* Pretty easy so far
* Outside of the animation, the artwork is kind of amateurish. Not atrocious, but a far cry from the original Shadowgate.
* Makes me remember why I like the invention of "run" buttons. Dude isn't a turtle, but sometimes I wish he walked just a bit quicker.
* The interface is pretty crummy -- too many button presses to pick up and use items. But thank goodness the game pauses while I'm fumbling through the dude's inventory
