After spending a bit more time with the game, I think I agree with what you're saying. I might feel differently about the game if, say, I had it as a kid and had to play the snot out of it since new games usually only found their way to my collection a few times a year... but with so many good titles I've yet to explore, it may be a while before I give this one a chance to grow on me.
I tried, but man... that level after the first boss where lava is coming at you from behind and that damned spider creature is throwing webs at your feet as the evil bird creature is diving for your eyeballs... wow. It wouldn't be quite so bad if your samurai dude didn't move like an animatronic president from a Disney theme park with a sword that, while occupying a quarter of the screen, has an incredibly small strike zone.
Strangely enough, I do want to come back to this one eventually. I was able to extract entertainment (and multiple championship wins!) from the TV Sports series, so I feel there should be something good in this game... just stick with it long enough to find it.
